💨Definition Of Narrative Text

Narrative text includes any type of writing that relates a series of events and includes both fiction (novels, short stories, poems) and nonfiction (memoirs, biographies, news stories). Both forms tell stories that use imaginative language and express emotion, often through the use of imagery, metaphors, and symbols.

 

💨Characteristics of Narrative Text

Narrative text has the following characteristics or language features :  

◾ Using the past tense (except for conversations)  
◾ Adverbs of time (one day, once upon a time, a long time ago, etc.) 
◾ Time conjunctions (when, then, suddenly) 
◾ Specific characteristics 
◾ Action verbs ( action verbs) 
◾ Direct speech

💨Structure Of Narrative Text

◾ Orientation 

Orientation is the part which is the opening paragraph of the narrative text. This opening section contains an introduction to the characters, the time it happened, and the background location of the incident (who, when, where).

◾ Complication 

Complication is the section that states the existence of the initial problem up to the conflict, and is located after the paragraph containing the opening (orientation), and usually contains the interactions of the characters in the story.

◾ Resolution 

Resolution is the end of a story that contains problem solving, and is usually located at the end of the story. In the example narratobet text in English above, the resolution section is located in the last paragraph.

 ◾ Reorientation 

Reorientation is the closing sentence which tells the final condition of the character in the story or the moral message of the story. Just For Info This Section not mandatory for narrative text.

💨Types of Narrative Text

Narrative text can be imaginary and real. This is an example genre that include in narrative text :

◾Personal experience (Stories that are personal experiences)   

◾ Fairy tales (Stories that are fantastic or full of magic)     

◾ Fable (Stories about animals that are usually described as behaving like humans) 

◾ Legend. 

◾Myth. 

◾Romance. 

◾Mystery.

 

 💨 Example of Narrative Text

Once upon a time, there was a man who liked to fish. One day, he got a magic fish. Yes, the fish can talk. “Don't kill me. In exchange, I want to marry you. " said the fish. Suddenly the fish turned into a very beautiful woman. The man was interested in marrying her. However, the fish princess put forward a condition. No one should know that he is a fish incarnation.

The man agreed. They eventually married and had a son. The boy really likes to eat, and he is naughty. Often times he finished the food that was actually prepared for his father. 

 

One day, his mother told the boy to deliver food to his father. However, on the way, the boy ate all the food in the basket. He went to the fields without bringing food. 

 

His father was very tired after a long day at work. Seeing his son coming, he was very happy. But when he found out that the food that his son had brought was gone, he was really angry. "I'm sorry, Father." said his son. “You fish boy! You know, I work all day for you. " exclaimed his father. 

 

The boy was shocked to hear his father's words. He also ran to the house to complain to his mother. When his mother found out about it, he was very angry. It turned out that her husband had broken his promise. 

 

At that moment, it rained very heavily accompanied by lightning. The river water quickly overflowed. The husband immediately ran towards the house. However, what happened. Instead, he saw that his wife and child had disappeared in the overflowing rain. He was really sorry that he broke his promise. However, there was nothing more that could be done. Now, their residence is a lake. The lake is called Lake Toba after the boy's name. The lake is very famous in Indonesia.
