Definition

News Item Text is a type of text in English that provides information on an important event that deserves to be made news (news). The purpose of this text is to provide readers with information about important events.

Function

The purpose of someone writing a news item is to convey information to readers, viewers, or listeners, news that is interesting and worthy of being news and in a way that invites public attention.

Types 

• Direct Sentence
• Indirect Sentence

Characteristic features

• Focus on an incident

• There is a headline that contains brief information

• Use some useful verbs to inform something, such as (happened, told, said, informed, quoted, reported, etc.)

• There are indirect sentences and direct sentences that use quotation marks ("...")

• This text contains descriptions of the place, time and also the details of the events taking place.

• One of the News Item Texts that can use the Simple Present Tense to explain facts and also the Simple Past Tense which explains past events.

Structure

• Main event (Main event)
  

The part that tells about a summary of an event or main event in the text.

• Background event/elaboration
  

The part that tells about the background of events or events that occurred. This section includes who was involved, and where, and how the event occurred.
 

• Source (Source)
  

The section that tells about comments, witnesses to events, expert opinions, and so on regarding the events or events that are reported.

Example

 Second step of reopening plan confirmed

As of Wednesday 19 May, indoor sports facilities will reopen and people will once again be able to visit outdoor leisure locations like amusement parks, open air museums and open-air theatres. People from the same household or up to 2 people from different households (not counting children under 13) can attend these locations together. Outdoor seating areas at restaurants, bars and cafés can also be open longer, from 06.00 to 20.00. Find out here what other measures are being lifted or relaxed as of 19 May.
Public libraries will reopen on 20 May. Initially, they had not been mentioned in step 2 of the reopening plan, but the government has decided to now include them. Reservations and a health check are mandatory.
