Definition of Caption Text

Caption text is a short text that is used to complete an image. Caption text appears usually under pictures, photos, graphics, posters and even tables.

Caption Text Function

֎ As an addition to the credibility of an image or video that is given a caption. That way, the image or video will be treated as real.

֎ As a way to get lots of people interested in watching videos or pictures. In addition, the use of caption text also provides an explanation of the images or videos that have been posted.

֎ Complete information from photos or images that are already published in social media or print media. With caption text, readers will easily understand the intent of the video or image.

Types of Caption Text

֎ Identification, This type of caption text is usually used to describe or identify everyone in the photo, but does not explain a story.
֎ Group Captions, Group Captions are usually used to describe multiple images.
֎ Story-Telling Caption, Story-telling captions are the ideal type of caption and can be used whenever possible.
֎ Summary, For the type of caption summary, it usually contains an explanation of the subject in the picture, the activities carried out in the picture, the time of the incident, the location of the incident and the reason why the activity was carried out.
֎ Quotes, Quote caption means containing a quote from someone in the picture.
֎ Cutline, Cutline type captions are the ones most often found in pictures and writings on newspapers and media, both offline and online.
֎ Expanded, the type of expanded caption is the type of caption that has the most complete information.

Language Features 

The language features used include:
֎ Exclamation mark (Exclamation)
 Can be interpreted as an exclamation mark used to express strong emotions such as surprise, joy, praise, and sadness. Angry or embarrassed. Captions usually end with an exclamation point (!). In English, some use the "what" and "how" formats.
֎ Questions or questions.
֎ Adjective phrases.
֎ Prepositional phrases. Mainly used for time and place. There are several examples of prepositional phrases such as bus stop, under a tree, in front of, table, street corner, and waiting room.
֎ Present tense, especially if most photos are news of events that are happening now, use the present tense in the caption to make it more informative.
